The Serie A side is slowly but surely trimming the fat from the roster.

Sweden international Robin Olsen and French striker Gregoire Defrel have left Roma to join Cagliari and Sassuolo respectively.

The big news of the weekend for Roma was the imminent arrival of Chris Smalling from Manchester United. With that, Roma finally has a fourth center back to complete the rearguard for the 2019-2020 campaign. However, It remains to be seen if they plans on doing any more shopping before Monday’s transfer deadline.

What is known is that Roma has to ship out some excess players from the roster. As a result, striker Gregoire Defrel has returned to former side Sassuolo, while Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen has moved to Cagliari – both on loan. These Giallorossi departures might not grab the same amount of attention as Smalling, but they are nearly as important as their final roster begins to take shape.

Earlier, Sky Italia revealed that Defrel will be returning to Sassuolo. The Frenchman was purchased by Roma from the Neroverdi two summers ago for €20 million. Now after one underwhelming season in the capital and a loan with Sampdoria, he is shipped back the other way.

“AS Roma can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Sassuolo for the initial loan of forward Gregoire Defrel”, said a statement on the official website of the Giallorossi.

“Defrel, 28, returns to his former club until 30 June 2020 for a loan fee of €3 million. As part of the agreement, the deal includes an obligation for Sassuolo to make the permanent for a fee of €9 million – subject to certain conditions being triggered.”

The Frenchman’s spell at the Olimpico saw him net just once in 20 appearances, and he spent last season on loan at Sampdoria, registering 12 strikes in 39 games.

Meanwhile, Robin Olsen, who never settled in at Roma and was eventually replaced by Antonio Mirante as the starter, left for Cagliari on a dry loan for the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign. He arrived in the capital last season to replace Alisson after a superb World Cup for Sweden.

After a move with French side Montpelier broke down earlier in the summer, it took some time to finally get Olsen off their hands. However, with Alessio Cragno out in the sidelines due to shoulder injury, Cagliari had to move quickly to find a replacement.
