FC Barcelona set to hijack Manchester United’s bid for Vermaelen

Spanish giants FC Barcelona are set to hijack Manchester United’s deal to sign Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, by making a last ditch offer for the Belgium defender.

The club-captain at the Emirates Stadium is set to leave the club this Summer after growing frustrated at the lack of first-team football, and it was widely expected that he would join fierce-rivals United, who are looking at new centre-backs after losing both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Vermaelen has grown frustrated at Arsenal after Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker developed an understanding at centre-back together which all-but ended Vermaelen’s stint in the first-team, and after spending a season on the bench, the Belgium is ready to move away.

Despite accepting that they can’t keep hold of him this Summer, Arsenal are keen not to let him go for cheap, and have rejected an ÂŁ11million bid already from United, but Barca are now considering a late bid for the 28-year-old.

It’s believed The Gunners want roughly ÂŁ15m for the defender.
