Ferdinand: United could regret losing Vidic

Rio Ferdinand fears that Man United could live to regret their decision to let Nemanja Vidic leave at the end of the season. The defender has also admitted that he is uncertain about his own future at the club.

Ferdinand has compared this decision to the one made with Jaap Stam back in 2001, when the Red Devils sold him as they believed his ability was going downhill. However, the Dutch centre-back would play on at the highest level for six more years and Sir Alex Ferguson later admitted it was a mistake to sell him.

Now, the 35-year old believes the same situation could happen with Vidic. United will get nothing for the Serbian, who has signed a pre-contract with Inter Milan. He is currently older than Stam was when he left Old Trafford, with Vidic at age 32, but Ferdinand still believes he has a lot to offer. The Englishman said:

“Only time will tell if Man United regret allowing him to leave. Obviously Jaap Stam played on for quite a few years at a good level after he left Man United and the same thing could happen with Nemanja. He’s a great player and it’s a shame he had to leave.”

Ferdinand is also out of contract in summer but wants to play on and ideally at United. He said: “I’m fit, I’m healthy and I want to continue playing.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of mates of mine in the game and they all say the same thing – keep playing for as long as you can. I want to do that.”
