Former Chelsea and Liverpool forward Fernando Torres has slated both Jose Mourinho and Rafael Benitez saying that neither manager understood the forward because they had never played football at the top level.
Torres conceeds you don’t have to have been a top player to become a top manager, he did say he is happier playing under someone who understands him better in the form of Filippo Inzaghi. Torres spent long periods of his career playing in England under Mourinho and Benitez, neither of the two have made it as a top level footballer.
The former Atletico Madrid hitman said, “I don’t believe it’s fundamental to have been a great champion before becoming a coach of a high calibre. From a technical and tactical point of view, competence can always be appreciated. But I have to admit that Inzaghi understands me.”
Torres went on to say. “Those who have played have something extra to offer their players. Inzaghi is a bit like [Luis] Aragones who made history at Atletico.”
Will Torres return to the form he showed at Atletico now he is working under another former top footballer?
