Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen is eager to keep hold of wantaway striker Dimitar Berbatov, despite the Bulgarian’s agent confirmed his intentions of leaving.

The 32-year-old has been a stand-out performer for Fulham since his arrival from Manchester United, but he has made it clear that he wants out of Craven Cottage, with a January move his ideal option.

Meulensteen, who has recently taken over from Martin Jol after he was sacked, spoke about the Bulgarian’s future after he watched his side lose 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur and he confirmed that there was no chance of the striker leaving in the New Year.

“No, not at all.”

“I’ve not seen or heard what he’s said, but if anyone knows Dimitar it’s me,” he added.

“Look at that performance tonight and tell me he doesn’t want to play for this club.

“If he continues playing at that level he’s one of the three best players in the league.”
