Gerrard hints at international retirement after World Cup

Steven Gerrard has hinted that he could possibly retire from international football after this summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

Gerrard has played 111 times for the full England squad, in an international career spanning around 14 years or so.

He is set to captain England on Saturday, as they take on Italy in Manaus in their first World Cup fixture.

This will be Gerrard’s fourth World Cup finals, and he is looking to end on a high.

For England, going out in the last-eight of tournaments is a frustration,” the Daily Star quote Gerrard as saying.

“The players that we have had over the years, we should have achieved more. But for me there is probably one final chance and that is in Brazil.

“So hopefully we can change it and finish my England career on a good note.”

The England captain is the last of that generation of players, and at 33 he will probably want to extend his playing career, with Liverpool plying in the Champions League next season.
