Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez said he wants compatriot and fellow defender Diego Godin to stay at Atletico Madrid. 32-year old Godin’s current contract at Atletico ends next summer and there are several reports claiming that the Uruguay captain will join Inter Milan next summer.

Godin who rejected Manchester United in the summer has been an integral part of Atletico Madrid since he joined the club from Villarreal in 2010. Along with Godin, Gimenez has held the backline for club and contry since 2013 and he wants his defensive partner to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Following Atletico’s  match against Girona at the Copa Del Ray, Gimenez said, “There is a lot of talk of team-mates and I want everyone to do well in their careers. But I want them with me because they are great players and we need them. I hope everyone stays, I love them all personally. The club also loves them and will do their best for everyone. I hope Diego is my partner for a long time.”

Gimenez is not the only Atletico player who wants Godin to stay. Koke said that he is hopeful of Godin staying at Atletico. Koke said, “Godin? I think he will want to stay on with us. He will have to talk with the club but I am sure they will find an agreement.
