Former Liverpool player Harry Kewell gave his opinion n Liverpool’s world record signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson. The Australian said that the reason why goalkeepers are earning such hefty sums is because of the increased focus on playing at the back.
Kewell said, “I think nowadays – even though back when I started playing goalkeepers were more about shot stopping – keepers have to play. That’s what we are looking for now in keepers. Understand their first job is to stop the ball going in the back of the net and the rest is a bonus.”
“If you get a good keeper who is comfortable in playing the ball out and into nice little pockets, then being confident to pass it, that’s why they are staring to rise in price.”
When asked about his former club’s Premier League chances, the 39-year old said, “I think they are heading in the right direction. As a fan you want to see them getting up there but City and United have very strong squads. Liverpool are heading in the right direction to challenge them.”
Harry Kewell is currently the head coach of League Two club Crawley Town.
