Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he wanted Atletico Madrid striker, Diego Costa, in the Summer, before he agreed to join Chelsea.

The two sides meet at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, both going into the game unbeaten in the league, and in his press conference, Wenger admitted that Costa was one of his transfer targets, but admitted defeat when The Blues went in early for him.

Jose Mourinho got the deal done before the World Cup and then officially announced it during the Summer tournament, leaving Wenger with no chance of persuading him to join the Emirates.

In his conference today, Wenger said this when asked about a potential pursuit of Costa: â€śYes, but that was a deal that was struck early.”

The Frenchman then continued by hailing the Spaniard for the impact he’s had on the Premier League already.

“Costa has done fantastically well, I must say. I am impressed by how well he has done,” Wenger added

“He has all the aspects of a striker that I like. He is focussed, always determined and ready for a fight.

“He has players like Cesc [Fabregas] who can always find him. He is a very efficient player, the timing of his runs and killing determination. You feel this guy is a killer and he has that in him.”
