Van Gaal happy goalkeeper didn’t leave United

Louis van Gaal has expressed his relief at the fact David De Gea didn’t leave Manchester United at the beginning of this season.

De Gea was on the brink of a deal to take him to Madrid on transfer deadline day.

But the switch did not go through due to paperwork problems and the 25-year-old signed a new contract in September to cement his position at Manchester United.

Since, De Gea has proved a vital player for United in their hunt for top 4 this season, and the last night picked up the club’s player of the season award for the third year running.

And his Dutchman admitted that De Gea could easily have gone back to the city where he started his career at the age of 13.

“Everyone knows he was invited to Madrid,” Van Gaal said.

“His girlfriend is living in Madrid, his parents, Spanish, Real Madrid is a great club but he is still here and as a manager I am so happy he is here and he deserves to win this title.”

However, United’s final standing in the Premier League could determine the future of both manager and player.

Real Madrid will reportedly come again for De Gea this summer and the shot-stopper is said to be ready to finally leave if the Red Devils fail to qualify for the Champions League.

And Van Gaal could follow him out the door.
