Italian boss approached by Manchester United

Italy coach Antonio Conte has revealed that he was approached by a Premier League side, strongly believed to be Manchester United, in the summer before they appointed Louis van Gaal.

The 45 year-old resigned his role at Juventus in July last year after winning three consecutive Serie A titles and went on to replace Cesare Prandelli as the Italian national coach.

Conte revealed that the club he was approached by eventually went on to hire a man who was coaching at national level.

“The English team that looked for me ended up signing the coach of a national team,” Conte told TV show Grand Hotel Chiambretti, with the unamed coach speculated to be former Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal.

“But my challenge with the national team is personal. Becoming a coach where usually the job is to select players, it is inspiring.”
