Japan stun 10 man Colombia in Group H opener.

Japan secured their first World Cup victory on European soil as Yuya Osako’s header earned a 2-1 win over 10-man Colombia in Saransk.

Jose Pekerman’s side started off the game in a worst possible way after Carlos Sanchez was sent off for handling Osako’s shot on target.

Shinji Kagawa scored from the penalty spot in the 6th minute of the first half before Juan Quintero brought Colombia level with a smart low free-kick.

However, Japan got back in front in the 74th minute. The Asian giants struck again by capitalising on poor Colombia defending on a corner as Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina ended up bundled in the back of the net after failing to deal with either the delivery or the header.

It was 2-1 in the favour of Japan and it sparked emotional scenes both on the bench and in the stands of the Mordovia Stadium.
