Joel Matip has revealed why he’s chosen to leave Schalke at the end of the season in order to join Liverpool.
The Bundesliga club confirmed the news earlier today regarding their centre-back, and since Liverpool have also revealed they’ve agreed a deal in principle with the Cameroonian.
Matip will now join the Reds at the end of the season on a free transfer once his contract expires in Germany, and he’s already opened up about why he chose to join Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
“I have always said that I would only leave Schalke for a team outside the Bundesliga – to get to know something new,” he said.
“Therefore, a change within the Bundesliga never came into consideration, although my decision is definitely not easy.
“I am convinced that now is the right time to take this step.
“Schalke 04 will remain a big family for me and I was always proud to play for this great club.
“This step is not easy and I will do in the coming months everything possible to get the most out of this season.”
Matip has signed a four-year deal with the Premier League club.
