Liverpool legend tells winger to rethink his decision

Raheem Sterling is making a massive mistake by asking to leave Liverpool, according to club legend John Barnes.

The England international has reportedly told officials at Anfield that he wants to quit the club in the Summer after feeling bullied into signing a new contract.

Sterling’s Controversy

Controversy has followed Sterling throughout the campaign after he initially snubbed a contract extension from the club. The winger then did a sit-down interview with BBC Sport without the club knowing, where he revealed that he won’t sign a new deal until the season was over.

However, reports emerged last night that the winger now no longer wishes to sign anything and he in fact wants to leave the club at the end of the season.

According to sources, Sterling has felt bullied by officials and also believes he wasn’t supported during pressured times by the media.

Sterling’s quit threat has sparked interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, with the trio expected to make formal moves at the end of the season, but Barnes has warned Sterling that quitting may not be the right thing.

Barnes Warns Sterling

Barnes, who made over 300 appearances for Liverpool, has warned the 20-year-old that if he leaves Anfield, he could become a bench player for a bigger side.

He told BBC Sport: “He is only 20 and has not achieved anything, he has not won anything.

“The time is not right for him to move, but if he wants to move the club should sell him.

“If he goes to Manchester City, to give himself a chance of winning the league, he will not become a regular for them.

“We have seen it with players in the past like Scott Sinclair.”

Since breaking into the first-team at Anfield, Sterling has gone on to make 91 Premier League appearances.
