Jose Mourinho reveals why big-striker wasn’t signed in Summer

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed why he wasn’t able to sign a big-name striker in the Summer for the club, and he has put it down to salaries.

The Blues were strongly linked with signing either AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao or Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, who eventually went on to join French side Paris Saint-Germain.

Eventually, Mourinho settled for signing Samuel Eto’o in the striking department, but also spent around ÂŁ50million on bringing in two attacking-midfielders, Willian and Andre Schurrle.

When recently asked about the lack of a big-name striker, Mourinho admitted that he had to think about the Financial Fair Play and some of the wages his targets were asking for were too unrealistic, even for Chelsea.

When Mourinho was asked about FFP denying him a star-striker, he replied with: “Correct. Because of transfer fees and salaries.

“Players are not just about transfer fees, but big wages. Of course there’s a certain profile of player we don’t go near.”
