Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, is still keen on signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, despite the reports suggesting youngster Kurt Zouma is set to play an important role in the first-team.

Mourinho gave the young centre-back the number five shirt which has sparked speculation that he could be a crucial figure for the club next season instead of going out on loan like originally thought.

The 19-year-old signed for The Blues back in January from St Etienne for ÂŁ12.5million, and it was expected that he would go back out on loan for the 2014/2015 season, but after Mourinho released his kit numbers, speculation has suggested that he could be a crucial part of Chelsea’s first-team.

With Zouma set to stay, it was reported that Mourinho’s interest in Madrid starlet, Varane, was over, but according to reports today, the Chelsea boss is still keen on signing the 21-year-old.

Mourinho handed Varane is Madrid debut during his time at the Bernabeu, and he has quickly blossomed into one of the best young centre-backs in world football.

The French international is reportedly unhappy at Madrid due to the lack of first-team football, and he is set to hold crunch talks with Carlo Ancelotti this Summer regarding his future.
