Liverpool eyes Jonathan Tah for defensive reinforcement after Matip’s injury blow

Following Matip’s knee injury, Liverpool FC is focusing on obtaining Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen in order to improve its defensive lineup.

Tah is seen by Jurgen Klopp as a potential addition to the team as they prepare for a possible defensive restructuring.

Even with players like Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarell Quansah, Liverpool seems keen to find a long-term answer for their backline.

According to 90min, Liverpool really wants Tah and thinks a deal may be reached during the coming January transfer window.

The 6′ 5in defender may be difficult for the Bundesliga title hopefuls to let go of, but Liverpool could feel compelled to move quickly before Tah’s estimated €18 million release clause expires at the end of the current season.

The historical similarity between Tah and Virgil van Dijk gives Liverpool’s desire an intriguing new angle.

Drawing comparisons between the two defenders, former Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz once highlighted the necessity for Tah to continually improve Van Dijk’s aggressive defending approach.

“I certainly see parallels between Jonathan and Virgil van Dijk,” said Bosz.

“I know Van Dijk well because he comes from the Netherlands. He has made progress, but he also had to master aggressiveness in defending. I’m sure Jonathan will succeed in that too. I think he is at his best when he plays aggressively. If he puts that on the mat, he is a top player. If he doesn’t, it will look very different. That’s the biggest difference with him,” he added.

Now that Tah and Van Dijk might be teaming up at Anfield, the storyline is fascinating. Liverpool would have a strong defensive duo in addition to Tah’s opportunity to learn from one of the greatest in the game.

The football world is waiting to see if Liverpool would attempt to sign the tall German defender as the transfer deadline draws near.
