Defender opens talk with Dutch club

Liverpool have confirmed they are in talks with Fenerbache over the sale of Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel.

The Slovakia captain, who represented his country at this summer’s European Championships, joined Liverpool from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.

Skrtel, 31, made 21 starts in the Premier League last season, but Jurgen Klopp has added to his defence this summer with the signing of Joel Matip.

Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish top-flight last season.

Skrtel came under fire from fans last season due to some poor performances for Liverpool, including a dismal showing away at Watford, when the Reds lost 3-0 and he eventually went off injured, and away at Southampton, where he replaced Dejan Lovren at half time while Liverpool were 2-0 up, and then the team lost the game 3-2.

Overall however, Skrtel has had a strong 8 years at Anfield and would be looked upon as a solid player in Liverpool’s team for many years. He is rumoured to be valued at arond ÂŁ4million for any club wanting his signature.
