Former player urges Brendan Rodgers to spend
Former Liverpool favourite John Scales has insisted that the club must reinforce their squad with new additions this summer.
The Reds were Premier League runners up in 2013/14, but finished sixth last season and with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez now having left Anfield, Scales believes serious reinforcements will be needed at the club if they are to harbour any hopes of achieving a top four finish next campaign.
Brendan Rodgers was criticised last campaign after failing to sign a quality striker and finding a balance between attack and defence, so Scales believes this summer is a key moment for the Northern Irishman.
Scales Wants Signings
He said:Â “They strengthened last summer. A couple of the signings were promising and there were a couple that were really disappointing.
“When you recruit that many players, it’s par for the course.
“They have to go out and strengthen the spine of the team – they need at least three players. They need a centre half, a midfielder and a striker.
“They need a proven top European player. They need someone who has personality as they are lacking someone like Carragher, Suarez or Gerrard in the dressing room.
“Last season they didn’t get the balance at the back and up front they struggled.
“Liverpool have the most important three months coming up of any team in the league and I will be watching with great interest.”
