Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Atletico Madrid youngster Javier Manquillo after hijacking a potential loan move to Arsenal.

The Gunners have been interested in loaning the under-21 international for the season, so that they could send their own youth products out on loan elsewhere.

Both Carl Jenkinson and Hector Bellerin were scheduled to go out on loan for the upcoming season so that they could get first-team experience, but with Liverpool now keen to sign Manquillo permanently, Arsene Wenger may have to rethink his plan for the season.

According to reports in Spain, the 20-year-old right-back was unsure about the amout of game-time he would get at the Emirates Stadium, and would rather move to Anfield after being persuaded by Brendan Rodgers about his role at the club.

Liverpool and Madrid are now believed to be in formal talks to discuss a potential deal.
