Tottenham Hotspur are in formal talks with AS Roma regarding a deal for centre-back Mehdi Benatia, who has also attracted interest from giants Manchester City and Chelsea.
New Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has already confirmed that the North London club won’t be signing many players this Summer, but he is keen to strengthen their defence, and after nearly landing Ben Davies from Swansea City, his attentions are now firmly on a new centre-back.
Benatia won over many fans after his performances for Roma in Serie A last season, and it was widely speculated that he’d be on his way to either City or Chelsea, but now, according to reports, Spurs are already in Italy holding formal talks.
Franco Baldini, Tottenham’s sporting director, has a strong working relationship with Roma after they did business last Summer for winger Erik Lamela, and he is confident that he can fend off any interest to land the Moroccan’s signature.
