Striker opens up about his move to FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has finally opened up about why he had to leave Liverpool back in 2014.
The controversial figure completed a £75million move from Liverpool to Barca following the 2014 World Cup after his biting incident with Giorgio Chiellini.
Suarez was under severe pressure from the English media and was also constantly getting into trouble with the Football Association, and eventually he chose to leave the Premier League altogether.
Talking about his career and his reasons behind leaving Anfield, Suarez opened up to his former-teammate Jamie Carragher, and revealed why he felt he had to leave the club.
Suarez Reveals Why
“My desire at Liverpool was to help get the club playing in the elite because they had been five years without it. We used to talk about it in the dressing room,” he told the Daily Mail.
“If Liverpool are not in the Champions League, it is difficult to get the best players to come to the club.
“That’s why for me to come to Barcelona there had to be that opportunity to not just play the tournament but to win it.”
Suarez has gone from strength to strength at the Nou Camp, but he admitted that the failed title-bid under Brendan Rodgers still haunts him to this day.
Title-Bid Haunts Him
“That hurt. That hurt so much. We were so desperate to win it. I knew we had a unique opportunity and we were playing so well,” he added.
“It was that desire to get more goals against Crystal Palace that let them back into it and killed us. I knew when we drew that game the league was lost.”
