The Red Devils are keeping a close eye on the Real Madrid defender

Man United are contemplating a move for Raphael Varane, according to reports.

The Red Devils are on the lookout for some new defensive recruits this summer, with the side’s current defence injury-plagued and in need of a boost. Phil Jones and Luke Shaw have spent most of the season out injured, while several other defenders have picked up knocks along the way.

They have identified Varane as a player who could massively improve their backline and they are now considering a move for the cenre-back this summer.

There’s no denying that the Frenchman is a big talent but he continues to struggle to break the defensive partnership of Sergio Ramos and Pepe, with the La Liga side often preferring to use those two over Varane. It means that he hasn’t got as much first-team action as he would like.

Now, the Red Devils could offer him the chance to leave the Bernabeu and move to England, where he is likely to play regularly for their side.

A bid would need to be around ÂŁ25m

A deal is even more likely to go ahead if Jose Mourinho takes over at Old Trafford in the summer – the former Chelsea boss has been linked with the Man United managerial job and he was the man who originally signed for Varane for Madrid and he would love a reunion with the player.

However, even if the Special One doesn’t take the reigns, United could still make a bid. They’ve been extremely interested in the centre-back in the past and have made previous moves for the player, all which fell through. However, this summer they could step it up a gear to ensure they finally get their man.

Any bid for the defender would have to be  at least around £25m, to make Real Madrid at least consider letting the talented 23-year old leave the club.

This year he has played 33 times for Real Madrid in all competitions and he has impressed when he has been given the chance to start games in the centre of defence.
