Man United will make a move for Memphis Depay in summer if a bid for Gareth Bale fails. The plan for Louis Van Gaal, according to the Express, is for the Red Devils to cash in on Angel Di Maria and use the funds to make an offer for Gareth Bale.
However, if Madrid refuse to part company with the Welsh wizard, then they will instead look to Depay. He would be available for about £20m and he could be considered a better investment because of the fee and his long-term potential. He has been in fine form in the Eredivise this season and Van Gaal is clearly impressed.
The two worked together for the Dutch national team and LVG would like to work with him again at club level. PSV director Toon Gerbrands has backed up the fact that he could leave at the end of the season by saying: “They [Tottenham] were willing to offer €20m (£15m).
“We decided to keep hold of him. But he has the option to leave after this season.”
Tottenham of course were interested in him throughout January but a move never transpired and Spurs are now looking elsewhere, leaving United to pounce if they need to. Gerbrands also added: “I think these players [Depay and teammate Georginio Wijnaldum] are very attractive to a lot of clubs in Europe.
“So far, no one has come forward with an offer [for next summer] but I expect we will come under great pressure [to sell].”
