It has been our understanding that Manchester City were not planning on making any additions this January but journalist, Ian McGarry says otherwise.
Pep Guardiola has inquired to Atletico Madrid about Thomas Partey’s availability. The 25-year-old who has a contract with the La Liga side till June 2023, is currently a starting defensive midfielder under Diego Simeone and has registered 2 goals and 4 assists in 21 appearances this season.
Partey stands in a long line of defensive midfielders to originate from Ghana. He compares his game to a mix between Michael Essien and Yaya Toure. He is massively athletic with his strength and agility.
Having proved his worth in the Spanish top flight, he could very well earn a spot in Guardiola’s system this very season. City are struggling without Fernandinho in the deep holding midfield role.
The Brazilian is a huge part of the team’s regular operations, often carrying out all defensive responsibilities in midfield by himself. Ilkay Gundogan has been made to appear in the position but he is naturally more offensive minded and likes to drift forward with every attack.
Partey has been capped 17 times for the Ghana national side and supposedly is being scouted by Guardiola for over a year now, according to McGarry. City might have to prop up yet another £60m-£70m to land their man in the upcoming window.
