Manchester United were never close to signing Toby Alderweireld, according to reports. The English giants never made any attempt to bring the player to the club.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender was heavily linked with the club as Jose Mourinho had been in the search of a central defender to strengthen his backline but United failed to reach a deal with the North Londoners.

But if Mirror’s report is to be believed it was the other way round. Spurs never received an offer from the 20 times English Champions rather chairman Daniel Levy tapped the Red Devils to know their stance on the player.

Tottenham also insisted in letting Danny Rose sign for the Red Devils which would have solved Mourinho’s defensive woes. But United were in no mood in doing business with Spurs and rejected the chance to sign any of them.

According to a source, “There was never any interest from United in either Alderweireld or Rose. So it wasn’t a case of us refusing to sell either player to them — they never spoke to us.”

Alderweireld returned to the Spurs starting Lineup as they maintained a perfect start by defeating Fulham 3-0 while Rose hasn’t made a start this season.
