Manchester United reportedly launched an 11th hour bid to attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels, reports the Daily Express.

United had tracked the German World Cup winning defender all summer, however they saw a last gasp bid of around £20 million rejected.

Louis Van Gaal had planned a proposed swap deal for the 25 year old, having let Shinj Kagawa return to Dortmund for a £6 million fee.

The Manchester United boss had previously signed two big names on deadline day bto strengthen his under-performing squad, with fullback Daley Blind signing from Dutch club Ajax, meanwhile centre forward Falcao was also loaned from French side Monaco.

Dortmund had previously stated that Hummels would not be for sale at any price, with the Bundesliga outfit recently appointing him club captain.
