Manchester United are preparing to make a shock £16million bid for ex-Arsenal winger Gervinho.

The Ivorian left the Emirates Stadium last Summer in order to join Serie A side AS Roma for a fee of £11m, and after a successful season in Italy, the winger is now being monitored by Arsenal’s rivals, Manchester United.

The 26-year-old is so delighted with his debut season in Italy, he is apparently asking for a new deal with a whopping pay-rise, but Roma officials are not willing to meet his demands which could see his stay in Rome cut short.

Roma boss, Rudi Garcia has admitted that the main focus this Summer for the club is to keep the wage-bill the same, by not selling their stars, or by signing anyone.

He said: “I hope we will be able to keep our best players.

“The extension with Miralem Pjanic is a strong message: we want to keep our group and strengthen it.

“Our goal this summer is not to increase the wage budget, but logically we should not have to sell.”

According to reports though, United are willing to meet Gervinho’s £16m buy-out clause, as Louis Van Gaal undertakes a serious squad transformation.
