Manchester United has submitted an official proposal to sign Sporting CP dynamo Morten Hjulmand.
Last summer, the Red Devils acquired Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat to improve their engine room. Despite the additions, the pair is yet to get their stride at Old Trafford this season.
Additionally, Casemiro has struggled to replicate last season’s form, sparking speculation of a possible exit to reduce the pay cost.
Amid the doubts surrounding Casemiro, Manchester United has began to look at alternative transfer options, with Hjulmand appearing as a significant possibility. The Danish maestro’s abilities have caught the interest of United scouts, forcing the club to make an offer.
According to The Sun, United proposed a swap deal with Facundo Pellistri in their pursuit of Hjulmand. However, Sporting CP swiftly rejected the offer, stating that they will not part ways with their star player unless his £69 million release clause is activated.
Particularly, Hjulmand’s relationship with Christian Eriksen, who serves as his national team mentor, adds an intriguing layer to the transfer story. It remains to be seen whether United can use this link to entice the 24-year-old to Old Trafford.
Since joining Sporting CP from Lecce last summer, Hjulmand has established himself in Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup, contributing considerably to the team’s title challenge.
With his qualified skills, the Dane may easily fit into Erik ten Hag’s possession-based style, making him a potentially wise addition for Manchester United, whether in the coming January transfer window or next summer.
