Manchester United want to sign Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario to replace Michael Carrick according to reports.

Manager Jose Mourinho sees Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario as the perfect replacement for the ageing Michael Carrick.

Mourinho has given up on midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the Armenian could be sold to Inter Milan while Mourinho also wants Mario to join the Red Devils in a £40m deal.

Joao Mario only joined Inter Milan in 2016 from Sporting Lisbon for ÂŁ40m but it’s reported that he’s unhappy at Inter.

The 24-year-old starred and helped Portugal to win the 2016 Euro tournament in France and it was based on those displays that got him the move to Inter.

But Inter Milan expect to recoup all of the ÂŁ40m they spent on him if they’re to sell him to United,  according to The Sun.

Meanwhile, long-serving midfielder Michael Carrick, 36, is expected to retire at the end of the season after developing a heart problem.

Mario has spent most of his career in Portugal, playing for Sporting Lisbon and has made 41 appearances for the Portugal national team.

He has only made 12 appearances this season for Inter this season.
