Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill says the feud between Harry Arter and Roy Keane was being represented beyond normal proportions due to their heavy loss to Wales in the UEFA Nations League.

Ireland assistant manager Keane was involved in a verbal spat with Arter but O’Neill later insisted the two have patched up following their argument. The incident happened prior to their match against Wales and it might have been the reason for their downfall as Ryan Giggs’ side thrashed them 4-1.

O’Neill believes had they won their match against Wales the matter could have been represented in a more positive manner.  “Interestingly, I genuinely felt this, and do feel this at the moment, that it was a mountain out of a molehill. I do appreciate that some things can certainly escalate, and that was the case.

“Then suddenly they won the game against Everton, great result, it was how that fight actually bonded the players together.
