Defender was offered pay-as-you-play deal

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is furious with the club after they offered him an ‘unacceptable’ contract offer.

The Slovakian only has one year left on his current deal, and could leave the club on a free this time next year, but Brendan Rodgers and the board don’t want to take that risk and offered him an extension in recent weeks.

However, the 30-year-old has lashed out at the club and classed the offer as unacceptable and made him feel uneasy when reading it.

Skrtel was offered a pay-as-you-play deal, meaning he would only get paid for the games he featured in, and offer which annoyed the centre-back as he felt he was still in prime condition and shouldn’t be offered such a deal.

Speaking in his homeland, Skrtel hit out at the club and now faces an uncertain future after snubbing the latest contract offer.

Skrtel Speaks Out

The 30-year-old said: “It’s unacceptable for me. I think that such contracts are offered to players who are much older than me or players who have had some health problems.

“The contract, which was presented to me, makes me uneasy, so I did not sign it. There has been some speculation about the interest of other clubs for my person, but they are currently being addressed.”

The Reds could lose both Skrtel and Raheem Sterling in the near-future with both refusing to sign new contracts at Anfield.

The positive news for Liverpool is that they have signed a new player today with James Milner agreeing to join from Manchester City.

The England international will join July 1 on a free transfer once his deal expires at the Etihad Stadium.
