Per Mertesacker is ready to discuss a long term stay at Arsenal. The German defender admitted that he is feeling at home with the Gunners and is willing to sit down and discuss a new deal.

The 6ft 6in central defender, who wore the captain’s armband, headed the winner as Germany beat England at Wembley last week. With a great recent form at the back for Arsenal, Per is a cult hero with Gunners fans.

Injuries played a part in slowing his progress in north London but this season he has forged an effective partnership with Laurent Koscielny in the middle of Arsene Wenger’s back four.

“The first year was tough for me, a very tough challenge, but the club and the manager always trusted me in a special way,” said Mertesacker.

“I think it is a little reward that we are talking [about a new contract], because I still have one-and-a-half years left.

“There is no rush, but it seems that some people are delighted with my performances at the moment. I am pleased with the situation.”

Although it took him time to adjust following his transfer from Werder Bremen in August 2011, Mertesacker has finally adjusted to the English game and should be at the Gunners back four for many years to come.
