Mourinho wants red-hot atmosphere

Jose Mourinho was left to bemoan missed chances last night after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Galatasaray and urged Chelsea’s fans to generate a red-hot atmosphere in the return leg. Chelsea managed to score just nine minutes into the game through Fernando Torres and dominated for most of the first half. However, they could not add to their lead and they were made to pay in the 64th minute as Aurelien Chedjou equalised from a corner to level the scores.

The Turkish side were driven on by their home fans in the Turk Telecom Stadium and Mourinho believes that just “10 per cent” of the same atmosphere at Stamford Bridge could help see his side through to the quarter-finals.

He said to Sky Sports: “This is Turkey, this is Istanbul, this is Galatasaray. It is not easy. In the first half it was our game and we had chances to kill the game.

“I am not critical of my strikers because they had a good game, but overall when we have counter-attack situations we are missing the right pass or the right choice, and a second goal would have changed the flow of the game completely. In the second half they put pressure on us. They have very powerful strikers and the full-backs are both very good.”

Mourinho was satisfied with the result, as his side grabbed a crucial away goal but Mourinho has also admitted that everything is still to play for in the second leg.

“The result is not amazing. The situation in the second leg will be difficult. If Stamford Bridge can give ten per cent of what this public gives then that would be fantastic for us. We have to try and go through but it will be difficult.

“It is better at 1-1 than 0-0, so we cannot say it is a bad result, but obviously they are a very good team and it will be difficult at Stamford Bridge.”
