Training exercise led to match abandonment

It’s been confirmed that the ‘suspicious package’ discovered at Old Trafford on Sunday, that lead to the match being abandoned, was left there by mistake, by a private company following a training exercise.

It’s thought the exercise was conducted for the purposes of sniffer dogs in the ground during the week, and the ‘incredibly lifelike’ package was left behind after the exercise had concluded.

The failure to pick up the package lead to a ‘code red’ alert at the game on Sunday, and the stadium being completely evacuated moments before kick-off. Following the evacuation, there was a controlled explosion conducted by bomb disposal units

The game has been rescheduled for tomorrow night, but the Bournemouth fans and players aren’t happy with the situation, as many players had booked holidays for Monday morning.

One security official, who saw the device, said: ‘It certainly did not look like something you would want to mess with.’
