Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand criticised ‘weak’ Romelu Lukaku after Manchester United’s underwhelming goalless draw with Sevilla in the Champions League.

United had David De Gea to thank on Wednesday night as they left Seville with a 0-0 draw from the first leg of their last-16 clash.

The home side had over 20 shots on United’s goal but De Gea pulled off a number of fine saves to keep the score level. Whereas, the visitors failed to create many clear-cut chances.

Lukaku has endured a mixed time at Old Trafford since leaving Everton last summer and Scholes and Ferdinand were critical of his hold-up play against Sevilla.

“Again, Lukaku has to be better,” Scholes told BT Sport. “When you play counter-attacking football, the ball has got to stick.

“He was so weak. You’ve got to be strong, you’ve got to get hold of the ball. You’ve got to get your touch right and bring players in. Most of the time, he’s given the ball away.”

Ferdinand added: “He had 38 touches tonight and 18 times he gave it away. If you’re trying to produce a counter-attacking performance, that ball has to stick to allow your team to get out.

“With Lukaku in your team at the moment, the ball doesn’t stick so the counter-attack doesn’t happen.”
