Having been at Chelsea for nearly a decade, Paulo Ferreira knows a thing or two about Stamford Bridge.

In a recent interview, Ferreira named three players he believes are responsible for Chelsea’s sensational start to the season. Already 4 points clear in the Premier League, and cruising in European group stages, Jose Mourinho’s men couldn’t really have started any better.

‘The new players that came have lots of quality and the important thing is they have adapted easily,’ he said.

‘Diego Costa just arrived, it’s his first season and he is scoring goals.

‘Cesc Fabregas knows the Premier League really well and is a top player, they came and brought extra quality to the team.

‘It helps Diego Costa to have some Brazilian players in the team to help him settle, to tell him how the league works, and I think that’s important.

‘When you spend money on top players, you want to see them arrive and succeed, and it’s what we’ve seen from him.

‘I am really happy for him because he is doing really well. And I am sure the manager is really happy. The supporters want to see him scoring goals too and he’s doing that.

‘Branislav Ivanovic has also been fantastic so far.’

‘He has had a really good season and is a top player. Defensively he is very strong and it’s very difficult to beat him, but he’s also good in attack and can score goals as well. He’s a very consistent player.

‘At the moment Chelsea is doing really well and I am very happy for that,” he added. “I think they can be champions, it will still not be easy, it will be a long and hard season, but I am really pleased with how the team is doing.’

Soon to be 36-years-old, and now retired, the Portuguese defender played 202 times for Chelsea and made 62 appearances for his country.
