Guardiola says City will keep up the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the table

Manchester City kept themselves within striking distance of league leaders Liverpool as the Citizens thrashed Wolves 3-0 at home on Monday night and manager Pep Guardiola has warned that his team will keep up the pressure on the Reds at the top of the table.

The Citizens went into the game seven points adrift of Liverpool after their 1-0 win over Brighton but a brace from Gabriel Jesus and an own goal from Wolves skipper Conor Coady ensured that the reigning champions closed the gap to four points.

While Guardiola was happy with his team for getting the job done against Wolves, he has also advised his players not to be flustered by Liverpool’s fixtures and focus on their own game week in and week out.

“We were solid and didn’t give away many chances so it is three points to keep the pressure on the team at the top of the table,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“We have played a lot of time with 10 against 11 and we should be more aggressive in our attacking play, but we have a lot of matches in our minds and our legs.

“Most teams come here and defend deep and it is not easy, but we did it well and we got a third to take us closer to Liverpool.

“When you have a league campaign, you can drop points. We have incredible numbers so far but we can do even better.

“Of course we weren’t in our excellent moments against Leicester and Crystal Palace, but it is normal, and we came back in the games after by creating chances and conceding few.”

Gabriel Jesus played an influential role, scoring twice to take his goal tally to seven goals in three appearances this year.

“Everybody wants to do their best but it is important for a striker to score goals and he has got six in the last two matches,” Guardiola said of the Brazilian.

Up next for Man City is a trip to Huddersfield Town next week while Liverpool will play host to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
