Phil Foden Wants To Keep His Feet Grounded Despite being Compared With Andres Iniesta

Phil Foden doesn’t want to get carried away after being likened with Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta.

Foden was handed a start by manager Pep Guardiola and the youngster rounded off the evening with an all round display. City thumped Oxford United 3-0 to advance to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and Foden got involved in all the three goals.

Foden showed why he is tipped to be the next big thing in English football as he started the proceedings by stitching a delightful pass to set up the opener. He continued to threaten the United backline and his long ball to Riyad Mahrez caught the opposition defence in wrong foot and Mahrez sent it home to double the lead.

Oxford boss Karl Robinson compared the 18 year old with Iniesta but the teenager wants to keep up the good work. “I’m happy with that but come on – Iniesta is on a different planet!

“For them to call me that is massive, it means a lot. I’ll just keep getting these cup games and run-outs whenever I can and hopefully I can start a lot more games one day.

“There’s no need to rush. Pep knows what he’s doing and I’ll play at the right time. He’s good at bringing youth players through, he’s done it in his career before so just be patient, I’m still young and I’m still learning.”
