Raphael Varane has struggled for game time this season.

The World Cup winner has started only one of United’s last seven games and has surprisingly fallen out of favour this campaign.

He has been overlooked in recent weeks with defenders like Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and even Jonny Evans all being ahead in the pecking order.

There have been reports of a feud between the player and manager but Erik ten Hag dismissed any such rumours and stated nothing but a ‘tactical decision.’

The Dutch manager is currently satisfied with the current partnership of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans at the back.

Club legend Rio Ferdinand baffled to see Varane lose his place to 35-year-old veteran Jonny Evans.

Ferdinand said: “We don’t know. If he’s on the bench, you think he must be fit.

“In my mind, when you’re on the bench you can play – because you could have to come on in the first minute if someone gets injured. So if you’re fit enough to travel and get on the bench, you’re fit [to play]. So I don’t know what the reason is.

“No disrespect [to Evans]. Regardless of what Evans has done, there is no way Jonny Evans was ever in Varane’s mind. He would never have been thinking about Jonny Evans.”
