It has been revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo wanted a move to Liverpool back in 2003, just before he joined Man United. The 29-year old ended up joining the Red Devils instead for ÂŁ12m that same year.

Gerard Houllier, who was the manager of the Reds at the time, admitted in 2010 that he turned down the chance to sign the Portuguese forward. Liverpool fans will be wondering what kind of impact he could have had at Anfield – Ronaldo went on to bag 84 goals in 196 games, helping Sir Alex Ferguson win the Premier League three times, the FA Cup once, the League Cup twice, the FIFA World Club Cup in 2007 and the Champions League in 2007!

He then made the move to Real Madrid in 2009, for a then world-record fee of ÂŁ80m. Before signing for United though, he declared his love for Liverpool and announced his desire to move to the club. A 19-year old Ronaldo said: “Liverpool are one of the best clubs in England and it would be a dream for any player to represent a club of such traditions.

“I will have to hope they make an offer that is good for both Sporting and myself. The English league is not one of my favourites, but it is very interesting. I think my way of playing can be reconciled in the Premiership. If a player has quality then he can play anywhere.

“Let’s see how things turn out. I am going to continue working as hard as ever.”

This revelation will have left Liverpool fans dreaming of what could have been for the club.
