Defender believes he should have remained with Chelsea

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has admitted that he feels that he should still be plying his trade at Chelsea.

Bertrand, who helped the West Londoners to a European Cup triumph in May 2012, joined Southampton permanently, having previously spent the 2014/15 campaign on the south coast.

And following his departure from Stamford Bridge, the 25-year-old informed former manager Jose Mourinho that he should still be at Chelsea.

Bertrand speaks out

Following his move to St Mary‘s, Bertrand, who is back in the England set-up following his performances last term, stated that he had unfinished business at the Bridge.

Bertrand said: “For me it wasn’t a case of ‘my career didn’t go right, I’m not playing for Chelsea’.

“I know personally I should still be there and I should still be playing, but it is no drama.

“That is football and these things happen. I am fantastically happy at Southampton, playing week-in, week-out and developing as a footballer and really enjoying life.

The defender, who also spent time on loan at Aston Villa during his time at the Blues, continued:

“For me it wasn’t a case of ‘my career didn’t go right, I’m not playing for Chelsea’.

“I know personally I should still be there and I should still be playing, but it is no drama.

“That is football and these things happen. I am fantastically happy at Southampton, playing week-in, week-out and developing as a footballer and really enjoying life.
