Brendan Rodgers has himself a new assistant

Sean O’Driscoll is expected to be announced as the new assistant manager at Liverpool, joining Brendan Rodgers’ coaching team ahead of the new season.

O’Driscoll is currently working with the England youth set-up, coaching the U-19 team, but he is set to leave his role in order to take over from Colin Pascoe, who was sacked by Liverpool at the end of the season.

Liverpool’s Coaching Changes

Liverpool’s board made drastic changes after a poor 2014/2015 campaign, sacking two coaches and several members on the transfer committee.

Despite the poor season, Rodgers was kept on board by Anfield officials, but his assistant and first-team coach were both sacked and now the club are looking for replacements.

However, it looks like the board have found their man as O’Driscoll looks set to join up with Rodgers ahead of the new season.

The 57-year-old has previous experience of management in the lower leagues, managing; Doncaster Rovers, Crawley Town, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Academy U16s coach Pepijn Lijnders has already been promoted to work with Rodgers and the first-team, whilst O’Driscoll is all-but set to come in and join the staff in the next few days.

Rodgers Praises O’Driscoll

Earlier this season, Rodgers mentioned O’Driscoll as one of the best coaches out there, so it’s believed the manager will be delighted with the appointment.

“The problem is that the guys who are ‘that type’ of [expansive] coach, you never hear of them really,” said Rodgers. “Look at Sean O’Driscoll. He is one of the best coaches I have ever come across.

“He has never had a chance in the top flight. His teams were expressive, had movement, they were technical, but he will probably never get a chance at a higher level.”
