AC Milan saw their hope of making a second deadline day signing shattered.

Shakhtar Donetsk had been in talks with the Italian side of a possible sale of their captain, but the move failed to materialize.

Earlier on Monday, speculation emerged from a number of different sources suggesting that AC Milan would try and follow up the deal for Ante Rebic by signing Shakhtar Donetsk’s midfielder Taison.

As revealed by Sky Italy‘s journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the Rossoneri held talks with the Ukrainian side, attempting to reach an agreement on the proposed transfer. Shakhtar had been still holding out for €30 million, the value of his release clause, but AC Milan were trying to negotiate a lower price.

Even Ukraine midfielder Yevhen Konoplyanka moved from Schalke to Shakhtar in a last-minute transfer, paving the way for the Brazilian international to get the green light to leave for Italy.

The 31-year-old made it clear that he wanted to leave the Ukrainian champions before the transfer deadline, but eventually talks broke down with Taison’s current side refusing to lower their demands. La Gazzetta dello Sport goes into more detail, explaining AC Milan refused to pay a high price for a player who turns 32 in January 2020.

Several reports have emerged claiming  Taison is in fact angry at his club because, at that age, he knows that the offer from the 7-times Champions League winner could have been the last chance to be able to play in a top European league. “Congratulations on ending my dream. Another dream broken,” wrote the 31-year-old on Instagram.

In spite of his age, Taison is a Brazilian international with eight caps and is a prolific source of assists, setting up 74 goals in 242 appearances.
