Martin O’Neill has expressed his disappointment following sickening chants from some Sunderland fans during their derby draw against Newcastle on Sunday.

A portion of the home fans were aiming some ‘very tasteless’ chants towards Newcastle centre back, Steven Taylor.

Before the derby got under way, Steven Taylor, made a comment that he doesn’t believe any Sunderland player would get in the Newcastle side. This obviously sparked fury within the home camp, but manager, Martin O’Neill, has slated his own fans saying they lacked taste.

He said: “I didn’t know that. That would be poor, in very poor taste, if that’s the case. I would be disappointed to have heard that.”

Despite only being on the pitch for 10-minutes, a lot of abuse was aimed at Taylor and chants such as ‘Steven Taylor, we wish you were dead’ were heard ringing out The Stadium of Light nearing the end of the game.

The derby was fairly clean compared to past meetings, but it still saw Newcaslte midfielder Cheick Tiote see red as he kicked out at a Sunderland player. The game ended 1-1 thanks to goals from Cabaye and a Demba Ba own goal late on.
