Stewart Downing completed his move from Liverpool to West Ham United today in a move that sees the Merseyside club lose out on a whopping £14million.

Signed from Aston Villa back in 2011 for £20m, Downing never really impressed the Anfield faithful and after two average seasons, he has completed a £6million move to Upton Park in order to rejoin former team-mates Joe Cole and Andy Carroll, who both made the same move last season.

The Englishman completed his medical at West Ham today and also agreed on personal terms and whilst giving an interview to the club’s official website, the 29-year-old has confirmed that he is fit and ready for the opening game of the season against newly-promoted Cardiff City.

‘I’m very excited. It’s a great opportunity for me being here, it’s a great club and I’m really excited to get going.

‘I’m ready and I’m fit for the first game against Cardiff City. I’ve played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front.

‘It’s all happened quickly, but I’m really excited and hoping to play a part on Saturday.’

Former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll, who is also at West Ham now after completing a £15million move earlier on in the summer, took to Twitter to welcome Downing to the club.

He tweeted:  ‘Great signing for us today! #cantwaittobeback #bargain’.
