Manager pens one-year deal

Dick Advocaat has performed a dramatic U-turn and has penned a one-year contract to stay on as the manager of Sunderland.

The 67-year-old stated in May that he would retire as he didn’t want to be in club management anymore, after escaping relegation with the Black Cats in the Premier League.

The Dutchman joined the side in March until the end of the season, replacing the sacked Gus Poyet, with the side sitting one-point above the drop zone.

At the time, he said: “The decision was always Sunderland or nobody.”

Original Rejection

Advocaat was offered the job permanently at the end of last season, but he told the club ‘it is better to stop now’, but has changed his mind and has extended his rein at the Stadium of Light.

The 19-time manager wept when it was confirmed that he kept Sunderland in the Premier League after drawing against Arsenal in their penultimate game of the 2014/15 campaign.

The former Netherlands gaffer, who had spent four years managing Rangers, lost his first game in charge of the Black Cats at West Ham United.

However, Advocaat led his side to gain 12 points in their last eight games to avoid relegation to the Championship, including a victory over North East rivals Newcastle.

Advocaat has an impressive CV with him winning the league title and cup double twice at Ibrox, plus league titles with PSV Eindhoven and Zenit St Petersburg.
