Following the FIFA World Cup 2022 window where club football around the world will be paused for six weeks, several players will not be returning to their old clubs. Here are six of the biggest transfers that have occurred which will be taking place in January 2023.
Hector David Martinez from Defensa y Justicia to River Plate
As of 1 January 2023, David Martinez will no longer be under contract with Defensa y Justicia.
Instead, the 24-year-old centre-back will be headed over to River Plate, where he is on loan to the Argentinian club for €1 million. This represents a fairly minor change for Martinez, jumping from one Buenos Aires-based club to another. The centre-forward has been playing his club football in Argentina for some time now, the country of his birth, but represents Paraguay at the international level.
Andy Lyons from Shamrock Rovers to Blackpool
Irish professional footballer Andy Lyons will be heading across the ditch next year to represent English Football League side Blackpool from 1 January 2023.
The deal is worth €0.4 million and will be the 22-year-old’s first time playing in the EFL in his career. To date, the defender has played in his home country for the Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland Premier Division, and also represented the under-21 Irish national team.
The move to Blackpool has the potential to be a big one, with the side winning the 2021 EFL League One, and being promoted to The Championship. Carlos Eduardo from Palmeiras to Paranaense
This January, Carlos Eduardo will be making the move from Palmeiras to Paranaense for a price tag of €4 million.
The Brazilian forward signed a five-year deal with Palmeiras in December 2018, however, has been on loan to Paranaense since 2020. At the start of next year, that transfer will be completed in a €4 million deal that will see Carlos Eduardo solidify the position he has held at Paranaense for the past two years.
Djordje Mihailovic from Montreal to AZ Alkmaar
While Montreal has successfully attracted talent in the past, next year Djordje Mihailovic will be leaving the Canadian Major League Soccer side for AZ Alkmaar.
The deal is worth €6 million and will see the American forward head over to Europe to represent the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar from 1 January 2023 onwards. This move represents a promising sign in football, with American players getting signed internationally—Djordje Mihailovic currently plays for the United States national side and will be eager to have a strong World Cup before heading to the Netherlands.
Leo Coelho from Atlético to Nacional
Finally, this January will see Brazilian footballer Leo Coelho undergo a transfer as well, heading from Liga MX club Atletico San Luis to Nacional in Uruguay.
Nacional will be paying €0.8 million for the 29-year-old centre-back, who brings with him a wealth of experience across South American clubs across the past decade. Coelho will be an asset to the Uruguay club team.
