Three coaches that could take over the managerial job at Magpies
With the Newcastle United managerial hot-seat up in the air, here at sillyseason, we thought that we would compile a list of the names in the frame to take over the Magpies.
The St James’ Park outfit have lost eight games in a row in the Premier league, under caretaker manager John Carver, following Saturday’s 3-0 hammering away at Leicester City, meaning that they are perched just two-points above the bottom three, having collected 35 points this season.
John Carver, who took over on a temporary basis when Alan Pardew departed for Crystal Palace in January, is unlikely to be given the job on a full-time basis, by Mike Ashley.
Carver was summoned to crisis talks with the Newcastle hierarchy, with United currently slipping towards relegation, following the latest in a long line of defeats, which occurred on Saturday lunchtime at Leicester.
So, with the job seemingly up for grabs in the summer, we have picked three current managers’ who could make the switch to the north-east.
Steve McClaren:
Reports coming out of the club suggest that Newcastle want current Derby County boss, Steve McClaren to take the management post on Tyneside.
However, it is understood that Mike Ashley would rather appoint the 54-year-old now, with three games left of the Premier league campaign, in an attempt to confirm their top-flight status.
And with Derby’s season ending without a play-off place, McClaren’s future at the Rams looks in doubt, having failed to gain promotion in the previous two-seasons, despite leading the east-Midlands to a play-off final last term.
A 3-0 defeat at home to Reading on the final day of the season saw Derby miss out on a place in the end of season play-offs in the Championship, with McClaren keen to manage in the top-flight, after almost a decade since his fruitful stint with Middlesbrough, where he won the League Cup in 2004, and reached a UEFA Cup final.
Newcastle would have to pay up to £2million for the former England manager, which may put the Magpies off for now, as the search goes on for a permanent manager.
David Moyes:
Another name on the list of potential candidates to take over the reins at St James’ Park, is former Manchester United and Everton manager, David Moyes.
Moyes, who is currently in charge of Spanish La Liga side, Real Sociedad, a post he has held since November, but could be tempted with a move back to English shores.
The 50-year-old Scot is likely to replace the soon to be departing John Carver, as Mike Ashley looks for a fresh approach for the St James’ Park outfit, following a dismal run.
He is understood to be keen on a swift return to the English top-flight, following his disastrous stint at Manchester United, which followed a successful decade at Everton.
Despite only being in Spain for six months, Moyes has steered Sociedad to survival in La Liga, having looked doomed to relegation when he took over.
Remi Garde:
Garde could be the surprise choice should Newcastle elect to appoint for the former Lyon manager.
The 49-year-old had previously been the early candidate to replace Alan Pardew in January, but stated at the time that he did not want the managerial job at the club.
A defensive midfielder in his playing days, Garde was capped by France at international level, and is probably most remembered by English fans, for his three-year stay with Arsenal between 1996-1999, turning out just 31 times in his stint at Highbury.
He joined his former, Lyon, in 2003 as a coach, before taking over as manager in 2011, spending three-years at the Ligue 1 side, before resigning in the summer of 2014, for personal reasons.
After departing Lyon a year ago, he said: “The reasons are personal and family. I feel the need to take a break.
So Newcastle fans, who do you want as the new manager of your club?
