Three bids from Chelsea rejected by Everton

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy feels that the Blues would’ve eventually signed John Stones this summer, had they not left the bidding so late.

The transfer window slammed shut on Tuesday evening, with Chelsea being knocked back in all 3 bids for the 21 year-old centre-back, with the final bid reported to be ÂŁ37 million.

With Chelsea suffering an indifferent start to the campaign as well as John Terry and Gary Cahill facing uncertain futures, it was no secret that boss Jose Mourinho was in the market for a central defender this summer.

And the former Blues defender feels that if they didn’t leave it until August to bid, then Everton would’ve had more time to spend the vast amount of money that they would’ve received.

Cundy Talks Stones Saga

Cundy told IBT: “Clubs, when the deals are so late, find themselves in the scenario where they need to find replacements for those players themselves.

“If Everton were to have sold Stones, they would have had days to figure out who to replace him with.

“So if they have the money, say ÂŁ40m, and a player in mind to replace him with, the selling club will add ÂŁ5m on top because clubs would know Everton are in that situation where they have to buy.

“It’s a vicious circle. You put the two factors together and selling doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
